Keeping your skin safe from the sun is essential. However, it’s also critical to use sunscreen that is safe for the oceans—specifically the reefs.
Did you know?
Just because a brand says “reef-safe” doesn’t mean it’s safe for reefs. There are currently no government regulations that require brands to adhere to making fully reef-safe sunscreen. Make sure you do your research and genuinely understand which brands are safe for the reefs.
Sunscreen Ingredients to Avoid
Sunscreen with any of the following ingredients is a “no-no” for the reefs.
- Oxybenzone
- Octinoxate
- Octocrylene
- Homosalate
- 4-methyl benzylidene camphor
- PABA
- Parabens
- Triclosan
- Any nanoparticles or “nano-sized” zinc or titanium*
- Any form of microplastic, such as “exfoliating beads”
*If it doesn’t explicitly say “micro-sized” or “non-nano,” and it can rub in, it’s probably nano-sized
