“Our world faces difficult challenges, but no more so than in the past. Working together in a constructive spirit, we can assure our children the future they deserve.” – Paul Kagame

When asked, “what do I truly live for?” My answer always remains the same: my kids, Claire, Sean, and Grace—the three most important people in my life.

Although, I am sometimes fearful of the world that they’re growing up in. Today is starkly different than when I was younger, and I honestly believe that future generations are progressing in a way where they see sustainability as a lifestyle, partly because it’s a necessity, not simply just an “option.”

The human race is seeing the harsh realities of how most of us, especially in developed countries, live and its impact on the environment. For a long while, many of us have had the luxury of not having to think or worry about resources, waste, or our impacts on the environment and the ecosystem. However, this is not the way we should be living. We need to be stewards of the planet for current and future generations.

Did you know that oceans cover over 70% of the planet? But around 8 MILLION tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year—with predictions that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050 if we continue our consumption trends. Animals, the environment, and civilizations are negatively affected by our wasteful acts of consumption in developed nations. It truly hurts my heart to think we’re impacting others negatively (whether it be direct or indirect).

We have to do better. Not only because it’s a necessity, but because it’s the right thing to do.

How can we do that? One solution is through the power of education. To truly solve these enormous environmental challenges, we need to prioritize education and give future generations the knowledge to solve these problems.

Brightmark X Guy Harvey: Changing The Tide

In partnership with Guy Harvey and Ocean First Education, we’re working to empower students around the globe to “Change the Tide”—developing a “Marine Science 101” curriculum that focuses on the impacts of plastic on our oceans, marine life, and our entire planet.

Do you want to help us with “Changing The Tide”?

I highly encourage you to support future generations by arming them with the tools needed to make the world a better place. Share this curriculum and other resources on our “Make Your Mark” page to spread this knowledge and education to the world as a whole.

We can all solve these problems together, leaving the world better than we found it for generations to come.

Warmly,
Bob Powell
