Job Summary:

We are seeking a Senior Director, Development to lead a team of three individuals in the development of greenfield commercial scale anaerobic digestion (AD) projects from approximately 200 to 3,000 MMBTU per day in size. The ideal candidate will have experience managing a project development group in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment. The candidate will preferably have specific recent experience in the development of renewable energy or gas projects across the United States. They will be expected to work with Brightmark’s business development team to oversee the development of projects from the early stages of diligence through construction start. Duties will include managing the team, allocating and prioritizing resources, performing site visits, securing discretionary permits and interconnection approvals, reviewing land rights and managing local project teams. Candidates must have a track record of quickly ramping up in new energy markets/regions, on-the-job problem solving and ability to communicate professionally in a variety of settings. This candidate will be expected to lead a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to conducting early stage market identification and site due diligence, contracting land through sale or lease, operation of pro-forma models and working with communities on permitting and incentives to gain site approval.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of the development team including team management, management planning and reporting, goal setting, growth planning, budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Lead all aspects of complex project development process by effectively managing land rights negotiation, permitting, interconnection, community approval and internal championing for multiple large AD projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments (including origination, engineering, finance and O&M) and direct external consultants to ensure successful development of viable AD projects.
  • Develop and execute tactical plans to ensure projects stay on budget and schedule through all phases of development process.
  • Conduct due diligence to assess risks and determine viability of early-stage projects using mapping and database tools.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with project stakeholders, including farmers, regulators and utilities, across the country, often in remote locations.
  • Foster community engagement, secure grants and tax abatements and understand relevant state, county and local regulations and utility interconnection standards and processes.
  • Work with the project finance department to populate proforma models that accurately represent AD project performance, capital cost, operating and development expenses.
  • Approximately 25-50% travel to customer locations for meetings and presentations.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of development in new greenfield AD or renewables project development obtained through demonstrated experience is preferred but not required
  • Strong organization, problem solving and communication skills
  • Understanding of energy markets (electricity and natural gas), strong leadership and strategic skills with an ability to balance and prioritize competing interests
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter with a burning desire to learn and win
  • Effective at creating, summarizing, and presenting information logically for executive decision making
  • Knowledge of finance and business concepts
  • Fluency in MS Excel, MS Project, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Experience in managing a successful team of developers
  • Budget planning and resource allocation
  • Ability to represent the company in a professional manner
  • Ability to perform with grace under pressure from both internal and external sources
  • Ability to perform and interpret financial analysis and provide appropriate data and information
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and interface effectively with cross-functional employee groups of all levels and competencies

 

Experience & Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering, economics or business
  • MBA or other relevant advanced degree
  • 10+ years of experience in development of anaerobic digester projects or other renewable energy or oil and gas projects
  • Energetic and aggressive in pursuing opportunities
  • Results-oriented with the ability to work independently in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Knowledge of legislative and regulatory issues affecting AD energy project development including RIN and LCFS markets
  • Strong desire to advance waste and energy solutions that bring global benefit

 

Salary:

  • $185,000-$195,000 per year
