VP- Operations

Under the leadership of the Chief Operation Officer, the Vice President, Operations (“VPOP”) will be responsible for the Operational Sites, including the submission for all required regulatory applications for registration of the projects with EPA, QAP, and CARB, for the company’s rapidly growing portfolio of anaerobic digestion (“AD”) assets across the US producing Renewable Natural Gas (“RNG”) for injection into the US natural gas pipeline infrastructure. In addition, the VPOP will be responsible for coordinating with the VP, Asset Management in support of the operations for the company.

The ideal candidate will have specific experience in people leadership and operations management including HSE, site operations, financial performance, risk, and contract management, 3rd Party and Stakeholder Agreements, regulatory applications and registration with EPA, QAP, and CARB, development of a culture that focuses on people development and delivering for the business. This will include experience in the operations and maintenance of a portfolio of diverse assets in renewable energy or conventional power sectors. The successful candidate will also engage in considerable interaction with the origination, development, engineering, and construction groups at Brightmark, hence prior renewable energy project development and execution experience is a plus.

The development and implementation of a Site Operations strategy designed to address the maintenance needs of the Brightmark RNG facilities (including pipeline as applicable) in a safe, quality, and cost-effective manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead by personal example and encourage all employees to conduct their activities in accordance with all applicable laws and the Company standards and policies, particularly its EH&S policies
  • Establish and enforce safety and environmental standards for sites while driving a strong culture of operational discipline
  • Develop and maintain a culture that aligns with the company’s mission and vision
  • Support in the development and implementation of operational and management strategies and objectives
  • Coordinate business strategy and execution for each project company
  • Oversee operations and maintenance of all operating assets including third-party O&M providers
  • Support in the negotiation of service contracts and budgets with third-party suppliers of O&M services for specialized operation and maintenance work on the operational assets
  • Lead in the identification of process improvement process to increase system reliability and/or increase operational capacity
  • Coordinate with Originators to ensure projects are set up to provide compliance with verification and maintain expected CI Score
  • Overview and provide leadership for all required regulatory applications for registration of Brightmark’s RNG facilities with EPA, QAP, and CARB
  • Consistently challenge each aspect of the operational process to improve production margin
  • Manage process changes, enhancements, and modifications to facilitate implementation of new or improved business processes
  • Collaborate in planning, design, development, testing, and implementing new technology or enhancements to existing technology
  • Reporting performance of the business to the COO, Management, and Other Stakeholders
  • Drive consistency in approach to operations and troubleshooting including the development of operational testing/trip plans
  • Lead and support business strategic initiatives that strengthen Brightmark’s internal project execution model and support a high growth portfolio
  • Advance strategies to improve operational and financial performance and protect the long-term value
  • Delivery of Performance, Availability, and Reliability targets for the operational fleet including the cash flow, return targets, and profitability of the operational assets
  • Support operational, regulatory, political, technical, and commercial risk management
  • Support the management of P&L, cash positions, ensuring that project budgets are developed to optimize earnings with a focus on revenue, opex, and capital expenditures
  • Support in the management of all project contracts and commitments
  • Address technology, system, process, and business challenges with a mindset of constant improvement
  • Manage smooth transition from project construction to operations while ensuring the highest level of site performance
  • Support the project execution team on new facility construction. This includes tasks such as identifying the strategic spare parts required for the new projects and arranging for their procurement; developing, reviewing, and approving the receipt of acceptable O&M manuals from company subcontractors; adding defects to the construction punch list, identification and rectifying said defects during the guarantee period; issuing final completion and performance certificates; and managing operations staff during commissioning and transfer of ops from the EPC Contractor.
  • Management of emissions (if applicable) and assure regulatory and environmental compliance
  • Support in refinancing and/or M&A activities
  • Monitor market and regulatory affairs to determine the actual or potential impact on current and future operational assets
  • Capital projects management, including expansions/reduction of technical risks
  • Support the origination, development, and project execution team on new facility development and construction.
  • Work with existing partners and prospects to build a close, binding relationship, developing a clear understanding of their current and future needs.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to team members

Experience & Education 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or Engineering
  • MBA or Equivalent Experience is a plus
  • 7+ years of extensive industry/leadership experience required, particularly in the areas of site operations of infrastructure assets
  • Experience coaching team members to improve their individual and collective impact
  • Previous Site Operations and Operations Leadership experience required, experience in a similar industry function, preferably in renewables, a plus
  • Broad hands-on technical experience in the development and operation of renewable and conventional energy projects

Knowledge & Skills 

  • Deep experience in the energy sector and understanding of US energy (power and gas) infrastructure, markets, and incentives
  • Experience and knowledge with leading high performing Operations Teams including geographically distributed team
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with an ability to manage a significant workload and prioritize for success
  • Highly entrepreneurial with knowledge of financial and business concepts, along with financial analysis strengths
  • Comfort with legal and contractual concepts and the effective application to business optimization
  • Experience with cross-functional leadership and management. Matrix organization experience is a plus.
