Operations Specialist

The Operations Specialist will lead and direct the operations shift teams, whose primary objective is to deliver a safe, environmentally sound, and optimum operation of our process teams. The Operation Specialist is accountable for and continually focuses on the development of the team’s personal ability to safely operate and efficiently utilize process equipment, anticipate operational problems in advance, troubleshoot, and respond to problems quickly. 

This position reports to the Refinery Manager of Brightmark Plastic Renewal, LLC.

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Executes Brightmark’s core values and vision.  
  • Provides supervision and performance management to the operators on all shifts  
  • Identifies improvement opportunities and will lead the implementation of solutions 
  • Delivers the refinery operations plan and the items assigned within the shift plan 
  • Ensures personnel safety on their shift and the safe execution of all maintenance work 
  • Identifies maintenance needs and initiates appropriate work requests 
  • Ensures equipment for maintenance is properly prepared 
  • Ensures constraints are proactively managed and the desired results are delivered daily 
  • Ensures product quality issues are adequately managed and communicated  Leads quality start/end of shift team meetings, logbook entries, shift relief, and shift plan 
  • Ensures all compliance activities for that shift are completed 
  • Manage projects within time and budget constraints 
  • Independently set and achieve goals and milestones 
  • Interact clearly, comfortably, and respectfully with all staff and internal and external clients 
  • Teach, mentor, and trains other staff as needed 

Leadership and Personnel Development 

  • Accountable for the supervision, and performance management of the operators on their shift. 
  • Jointly accountable with the refinery manager for compliance and developmental training on the complex operations.  
  • Responsible for the administration of annual performance reviews. 
  • Responsible for training/mentoring/coaching the operators (procedure reviews, safe work reviews, audit rounds, etc.), and providing constructive feedback in a timely fashion. 
  • Responsible for ensuring team members communicate and work effectively as a team and with personnel from other areas/functions within the plant. 
  • Responsible for communicating relative performance, business information, and goals to the operating team. 

Safety and Compliance 

  •  Accountable for department and personnel (Brightmark and contractors) safety on their shift. 
  • Accountable for ensuring that significant safety, environmental and operational issues recognized are and either mitigated by the shift team personnel or to request assistance as appropriate. 
  • Accountable for the completion of essential tasks and compliance rounds scheduled for their shift. 
  • Accountable for use and management/retention (sign off, file) of operating procedures used on shifts and accountable for managing operating procedure deviations encountered  

Unit Operations and Maintenance 

  •  Accountable for delivering the refinery operations plan, and the items assigned within the shift plan (equipment prep for maintenance, etc.). 
  • Accountable for ensuring constraints (operating envelopes, environmental constraints, product quality, optimization/efficiency variables, etc..) are proactively managed by the shift team and the desired results are delivered daily. 
  • Accountable for ensuring that product quality issues are adequately managed and communicated to downstream units. 
  • Accountable for identifying maintenance needs and initiating appropriate work requests. 
  • Accountable for maintaining quality start/end of shift team meetings, quality logbook entries, and quality shift relief. 
  • Responsible for completing gun drills (simulated situations) per the direction of the Refinery Manager  

Qualifications 

  • A high school diploma or GED certificate is required 
  • Three (3) or more years of refinery/petrochemical operations experience is preferred 
  • Five (5) or more years of industrial manufacturing operations experience (In lieu of Refining/Petrochemical experience) is preferred 
  • Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience is strongly preferred 
  • The ability to work flexible hours, weekends and rotating schedules is required 
  • Strong written and verbal communicator 
  • Strong managerial, technical, interpersonal, and communication skills 
  • Proven Leadership and Influencing skills 
  • Experience in analytical skills and process improvements
