Director- Health, Safety, & Environment

Location: San Francisco, CA or Remote

Under the leadership of the Chief Operation Officer, the Director, HSE will be responsible for Health, Safety, and Environment for the company’s rapidly growing portfolio of anaerobic digestion (“AD”) assets across the US producing Renewable Natural Gas (“RNG”) for injection into the US natural gas pipeline infrastructure. In addition, the Director HSE will be responsible for coordinating with Asset Management, Operations, Construction, and Engineering in support of the company execution.

The ideal candidate will have specific experience in people leadership and HSE program development, execution, and continuous improvement. This will include experience in providing HSE leadership to Development, Construction, and geographically diverse Operational assets with a focus on developing and maintaining a culture that focused on taking care of our team members, vendors, and growing organization. The successful candidate will also engage in considerable interaction with the Origination, Development, and Procurement departments, hence prior renewable energy project development and execution experience is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead by personal example and encourage all employees to conduct their activities in accordance with all applicable laws and the Company standards and policies, particularly its HSE policies
  • Develop and maintain a culture that aligns with Brightmark’s mission and vision
  • Oversee, direct, and manage the health and safety of Brightmark’s team members, work sites and vendors
  • Establish, track, and report the HSE KPIs including the development of a HSE Monthly Status Report
  • Create, manage, and enforce all safety trainings and programs for the Brightmark RNG business
  • Direct, develop, and oversee the general health and safety policies and procedures for Brightmark
  • Lead and Maintain Operational Sites Permit Compliance in coordination with Operations
  • Maintain appropriate OSHA, PHMSE, FERC, DOT and other applicable jurisdictionally required safety processes, policies and procedures, certifications, reporting requirements and be the lead Brightmark representative in all interactions with such organizations
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop, coordinate, and implement occupational health policies and procedures to promote and ensure effective safety operations
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop, administer, and ensure a safe workplace including programs for orientations, skill training, proper job instruction, hazardous materials handling, and the use of protective equipment
  • Review Brightmark’s contracts for safety and insurance requirements, provide feedback on negotiation of such contracts and ensure Brightmark complies with requirements of such contracts
  • Review daily safety reports, accident and incident reports, and other job site reports and maintain record of project incident and severity rates and total project hours
  • Perform regular site visits, scheduled and unannounced, to Brightmark’s job sites to perform inspections for health and safety compliance
  • Develop processes to collect data on training, collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting and generate training to prevent repeat occurrences
  • Train or manage the training of personal to comply with Brightmark and jurisdiction required safety requirements
  • Participate in the prequalification of subcontractors
  • Lead the review of subcontractor insurance, safety record and license qualifications
  • Develop budgets to support current and future company health and safety initiatives
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits, both in office and onsite, to assess employee compliance with safety regulations
  • Implement initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards
  • Support the origination, development and project execution team on new facility development and construction.
  • Work with existing partners and prospects to build a close, binding relationship, developing a clear understanding of their current and future needs.
  • Audit all Company health and safety procedures and protocols on a regular basis
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to team members
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience with developing and implementing HSE programs
  • Familiarity with OSHA other applicable jurisdictionally required safety processes, policies and procedures, certifications, reporting requirements
  • Tactical planning and implementation skills

Experience & Education

  • 8+ years related work experience
  • Certified Safety Professional is preferred
  • Working knowledge of HSE management systems
  • Knowledge in the technical fundamentals of safety management and risk assessments and reduction, including machinery and process safety, industrial hygiene, loss prevention, ergonomics, and occupational health
