Brightmark is hiring a project manager to lead all technical aspects in the development, construction and operations of greenfield commercial scale anaerobic digestion (AD) projects from approximately 2,000 Dth per day to 7,000 Dth per day in size. 

The ideal candidate will have specific experience in supporting AD origination in various regions across the United States. In particular, we are interested in an individual that has recent construction oversight experience of AD projects. They will be expected to configure market leading equipment for the project, consistent with corporate strategy, including feedstock material handling, degritting equipment, digesters (with supporting pumps, heating and stirring systems), digestate processing in preparation for nutrient sales, fuel upgrade systems to bring the biogas to pipeline quality and waste water systems. They will be experienced in designing systems based on various feedstocks including manure, protein plant waste, and food waste as the primary fuel source as well as processing low BTU gas into pipeline quality gas from municipal waste plants or landfills. They will work closely with the business development team in proposing and structuring waste and energy transactions, and will have a deep knowledge of offtake and power purchase agreements (PPA’s).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and interface with other departments and external consultants, contractors and equipment vendors to ensure the smooth evolution of a technically viable and economic AD project solution 
  • Develop conceptual process flow diagrams, functional design specifications, and major equipment bill of materials 
  • Work with the project finance department to populate proforma models that accurately represent AD project performance, capital cost and operating expenses 
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that conceptual design and proposal technical documents are provided to meet the timescales and quality standards required 
  • Promote business activity by coordinating, developing and presenting concepts and preliminary technical findings, at various stages of the project development process, whether in written form or in oral presentation format 
  • Work with outside engineering to translate conceptual designs into detailed design basis memoranda that meet the functional and contractual project requirements 
  • Negotiate and manage large AD equipment supply contracts and O&M service transactions for AD technology providers. 
  • Stay abreast of pricing trends in the AD sector and maintain a data base of major component costs to be used in pricing and screening new project opportunities. 
  • Stay abreast of AD system issues and solutions commonly experienced when operating and maintaining large AD plants. 
  • Stay abreast of O&M contracting structures which efficiently pass O&M risk to an experienced third- party contractor. 
  • Produce procurement packages to enable successful design, construction, commissioning, operation and servicing of AD projects. 
  • Act as owner’s primary contact overseeing all aspects of the engineering procurement and construction of AD projects across the country, often in remote locations. 
  • Stay abreast of new technology and product development to inform the organization about trends and product options 

Education and Experience

  • University degree in chemical engineering, project and construction management training, and experience in financial modeling of AD projects, MBA desirable
  • 15+ years’ experience in plant construction and waste water with 5+ years in the anaerobic digester sector 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of engineering and construction practices in new greenfield AD project construction obtained through demonstrated experience; 
  • Strong analytical and modeling (financial and technical) skills for energy projects, specifically for AD and CHP systems; 
  • Understanding of energy markets (electricity and natural gas), legislative and regulatory issues affecting AD energy project development including RIN and LCFS markets; 
  • Ability to represent the company in a professional manner; 
  • Strong leadership and strategic skills with an ability to balance and prioritize competing interests 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and interface effectively with cross-functional employee groups of all levels and competencies 
  • Ability to perform and interpret financial analysis and provide appropriate data and information 
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills 
  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter with a burning desire to learn and win 
  • Effective at creating, summarizing, and presenting information logically for executive decision making 
  • Knowledge of finance and business concepts
